Harmonizing Wellness: How Collegiate Marching Band Participation Shapes Student Well-Being and Development - JCAPS Vol. 8 Issue 2

Shanice White (Mississippi State) and Masha Krsmanoic (University of Southern Mississippi) studied the experience of students in collegiate marching bands and its effects on a variety of student outcomes.

This qualitative study explores the experiences of collegiate marching band students, with particular attention to how participation influences their emotional well-being and cocurricular engagement. Using a phenomenological approach, the research examines how students perceive the emotional impact of marching band participation, including the stressors, supports, and structural barriers that shape their mental health. Ten students from multiple institutions participated in semi-structured interviews, with three major themes emerging: the emotional highs and lows of participation, the role of community and belonging, and challenges accessing mental health resources. Findings suggest that targeted support strategies, enhanced training for band staff, and improved access to campus resources can strengthen student well-being and developmental outcomes in collegiate marching band settings. The study offers actionable insights for campus activity professionals and music program leaders seeking to foster healthier, more supportive cocurricular environments.
