Creating a Climate of Inclusion: Developing Your Own Social Justice Retreat
    Category: Webinars

  • Members: All
    Regions: All
    Target Audience: All
As campuses become increasingly diverse, the conversation has shifted from one focused on representation to understanding the experiences of underrepresented students. The challenge that many campuses face - particularly Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) - is a general lack of knowledge or awareness. Oftentimes, students who aren’t already invested in diversity conversations are resistant to attending didactic presentations about a topic they may not value or fully understand. Further, faculty and staff may not have opportunities to develop their diversity toolkit in a formal way. During this discussion, the presenters will outline the process their campus underwent in developing and adopting a social justice retreat that satisfied many of these problems. They will share what ignited the need for such a retreat, how it was planned and developed, and how students, faculty, staff -- and campus as a whole -- have benefited as a result of the INTERSECT Social Justice Retreat. The conversation will conclude with advice for participants interested in implementing a social justice retreat of their own - including what coalitions to consider building, what challenges may be faced, and how to define and share the successes of the retreat.
