NACA® South - Conference Awards

The NACA® South Regional Conference presents these awards to deserving individuals, programs and programming boards each year.

All 2019 award nominations will be accepted through Sunday, Sept. 8.

Board of Excellence Award

This award recognizes the best activities boards in the NACA® South Region. There are three award categories based on your school's programming budget. Any NACA member school attending NACA® South can submit a Board of Excellence Award application.

Submit a written application and supporting materials. After review, nominees will be narrowed to no more than four finalists in each school budget size category, based on their 2018-2019 budgets. Finalists will then be asked to prepare a 30-minute oral presentation to be delivered before a panel of judges on site in Chattanooga, TN. Your school will be notified two weeks before the conference as to whether you will need to prepare an oral presentation.

Review of Written Application:

All submissions must include materials that respond to the questions listed later in this description to be considered. Each submission is evaluated with the same scoring criteria.

Supporting Materials:

Each school is encouraged to submit promotional materials, event/organizational pictures, testimonials from student attendees, evaluation information and other information as needed and relevant to the submission questions. Your materials should relate specifically to the written documentation. Overall presentation of the materials will also be considered as a part of the evaluation criteria. Each submission and its supporting materials must be submitted electronically.

Written Information:

1. Organizational Goals

  • Describe your organization's goals and/or mission.
  • Describe how you achieved those goals and mission through your programming schedule.

2. Organizational Information

  • Describe what types of events make up your programming calendar (i.e. comedy, coffeehouse, etc.).
  • What is your typical annual budget? (Please submit a copy of your annual budget – salaries will not be included in the amount considered.)
  • Discuss how your organization financially supports its programming efforts.
  • How many members are on your board?
  • How many advisors?

3. Planning and Preparation

  • Elaborate on your target audience.
  • Explain any challenges to your programs and your responses to them.
  • List all campus resources that contributed to the success of your programs.

4. Publicity and Promotion

  • Describe your promotional strategies for attracting your target audience.
  • Describe your advertising methods and highlight any special creative techniques.

5. Evaluation

  • Discuss any evaluation process used in measuring the success of your programs.
  • Demonstrate impact on the campus community.

6. Campus Support

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the criteria above. Elaborate on the value of your organizational programming efforts in relation to the educational mission of the college or university. Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.
  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support. Letters should detail the impact the organization has made on campus. At least one letter should be from the organization's advisor.

Outstanding Late-Night Program

Programs must have been presented during the previous academic (2018-2019) year. Three awards will be given in each area based on the institution's programming budget.

Criteria:

  • Effective use of available resources (financial, human, logistical)
  • Evidence of an effort to encourage, promote and market participation in the series/program to the student population (i.e. posters, newspaper ads, etc.)
  • Involvement of students in the planning and implementation of the series/program
  • Clarity and achievement of stated purpose and goals of the series/program
  • Effective evaluation of the series/program

Nomination Materials:

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the criteria above. Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.
  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support, provided by a student participant and/or advisor for each award submission.

Outstanding Multicultural Program

Programs must have been presented during the previous academic (2018-2019) year. Three awards will be given in each area based on the institution's programming budget.

Criteria:

  • Effective use of available resources (financial, human, logistical)
  • Evidence of an effort to encourage, promote and market participation in the series/program to the student population (i.e. posters, newspaper ads, etc.)
  • Involvement of students in the planning and implementation of the series/program

Outstanding Graduate Assistant

The award honors a graduate student currently pursuing an advanced degree who:

  • Demonstrates commitment to both their current position and their graduate education,
  • Is currently advising in the campus activities field at a NACA® South Region member institution.

Nominators must demonstrate the impact the graduate student has made on their campus, balancing the responsibilities related to their graduate assistantship, institution and programming board(s) they advise or work with.

Criteria:

  • Currently holds a graduate assistant position at a NACA member institution
  • Provides outstanding service to their institution
  • Shows promise as a future contributor to their related field of study
  • Has been creative and innovative in their efforts at their institution
  • Has overcome challenges to improve programs or has motivated students to look "outside the box" of programming
  • Has helped students in planning and implementation of series/programs

Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the above criteria.  Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, student's testimonials, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.

Submit a minimum of two letters of support, one from students the individual advises and one from the individual's direct supervisor.

Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader Award

This award is presented to an undergraduate student leader at a NACA® South member school who has demonstrated dedication and commitment to campus activities, has been active in NACA activities, and is an active member of the institution's programming board.

Criteria & Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Has displayed outstanding dedication to student activities, student organizations, student leadership and engagement
  • Has created or helped evolve traditions to enhance the institution's social and educational experience
  • Has challenged/motivated the programming board to be innovative and meet the needs of the campus community
  • Has consistently helped promote the organization and benefits of getting involved to the campus community
  • Has actively participated in NACA activities (including but not limited to any of the following: regional conferences, national convention, Institute participation, volunteering, educational session presentations)
  • Has participated for at least one year in the areas of student activities, student organizations, student leadership and engagement prior to nomination

Nomination Materials:

  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support, one provided by the direct advisor of the student.
  • Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, student testimonials, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.

Outstanding Associate Member Award

NACA® South recognizes associate member commitment and the role they play in the development of student leaders through this award.

Criteria & Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Must be a current associate member or an employee of an associate member company or firm
  • Demonstrates exemplary leadership and participation in the NACA® South Region
  • Must attend the regional conference at which the award is being presented
  • Shows a commitment to programming and student development
  • Provides excellent customer service
  • Demonstrates ease of accessibility
  • Presents a high quality of entertainment
  • Shows overall commitment to college student activities

C. Shaw Smith Founders Award

The highest honor presented by the NACA® South Region, this award goes to a student, staff member or an associate member at a NACA® South member school or national associate member firm who has consistently given of their time and talents and contributed significantly at NACA's regional and the national levels. The award is not necessarily given in each category each year.

Criteria & Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Must be significantly involved in campus activities for at least two years
  • Has given their time and talents and contributed significantly to NACA on the regional and national levels
  • Has created opportunities for students to be active in campus activities
  • Has made a significant impact on campus activities
  • Is viewed by colleagues as one of the outstanding professionals, associates or students in the campus activities field.

Nomination Materials:

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the above criteria. Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.
  • Submit a minimum two letters of support, one from the individual's direct supervisor and one from the individual's direct advisees or an institution where they've worked.

Shuronda H. Smith Outstanding New Professional Award

This award is presented annually to a professional staff member who has been in the campus activities field for one to three years and at a NACA® South member school for at least one year. The nominee must show evidence of outstanding service at their institution and active involvement on NACA's regional or national levels.

Criteria & Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Has actively participated in NACA activities (including but not limited to any of the following: regional conferences, national convention, institute participation, volunteering, educational session presentation)
  • Has made a significant contribution to campus life as a new student activities professional
  • Has demonstrated the potential and commitment for excellence in service to student leaders
  • Is viewed by colleagues as an educator
  • Displays genuine support and regard for students

Nomination Materials:

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the above criteria.
  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support, at least one of which must be from the individual's direct supervisor.
  • Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.

Outstanding Student Activities Professional Award

This award is presented annually to a NACA® South professional staff member who best exemplifies outstanding achievement in campus activities advisement.

Criteria & Qualification for Candidates:

  • Must have four years or more experience in the student activities field
  • Has actively participated in NACA activities (including but not limited to any of the following: regional conferences, national convention, institute participation, volunteering, educational session presentation)
  • Has provided outstanding developmental opportunities for students in campus activities
  • Has made an extraordinary impact on students' lives and has earned their respect
  • Is currently employed in student activities advisement at a NACA member institution, and has been at this institution for at least nine months.

Nominations Materials:

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the above criteria.
  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support, at least one of which must be from the individual's direct supervisor.
  • Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.

Outstanding Educational Session Awards

These awards recognize efforts and contributions to enhance the student learning experience at the NACA® South Regional Conference. Educational area volunteers use audience feedback forms to guide award decisions. Outstanding educational sessions will be recognized in the categories of Student, Professional Staff, Associate Member, and Collaboration between Associate and School members. All educational sessions will be considered.

Criteria:

  • Session relevance (purpose of the session)
  • Creativity
  • Opportunities for audience learning

Social Media Awards

These awards recognize outstanding utilization of social media to promote a series/program. Programs must have been presented during the previous academic year.

Criteria:

  • Innovative use of social media resources and platforms
  • Evidence of an effort to encourage, promote and market participation in the series/program to the student population
  • Increased involvement of larger campus in the series/program due to social media implementation
  • Clarity and achievement of stated purpose and goals of the series/program
  • Effective evaluation of the series/program

Nomination Materials:

  • Provide a narrative and any supporting evidence of the above criteria.
  • Submit a minimum of two letters of support, at least one of which must be from the group's advisor.
  • Additional supporting materials (i.e. publicity, newspaper reviews, recognition, etc.) may also be included with the nomination.
