The Dream in Practice Webinar Series: What’s Involvement Got to Do With Underrepresented College Students’ Success?
    Category: Webinars

  • Members: All
    Regions: All
    Target Audience: All
Decades of empirical research have shown that involvement matters in terms of college student success. Students who are involved purposefully in meaningful high-quality experiences earn better grades, persist at higher rates, and feel better about their overall experience compared to less- or non-involved peers. More recent research has demonstrated that investing time and energy to collegiate activities (clubs/organizations), sports, fraternities, gospel choirs, and more fosters a strong sense of belonging for students, especially underrepresented groups. In this webinar, Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, author of College Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for All Students, shares his theory of belonging, new insights from the 2nd edition of his book, and highlights practical example of how we can promote involvement, foster belonging, and ensure student success on an array of college campuses! At the end, participants in this webinar will be able to: -Articulate the connection between students’ involvement in campus activities and student success -Identify and describe the core elements of Strayhorn’s (2019) revised theory of belonging -Draw linkages between involvement, belonging, and students’ sense of mattering -List and explain at least three (3) ways to foster students belonging through campus involvement -Recall and list at least three (3) experts or resources on the topic of involvement and belonging -Apply information from the webinar to immediate practice in forming new or revising existing campus activities
