JCAPS Advisory Board General Member
Category: National Volunteer Positions

  • Members: Schools, National Associates, Regional Associates
    Regions: All
Target Audience: Faculty, Graduate Student, Professional Staff, Undergraduate Student
Member of the Journal of Campus Activities Practice and Scholarship (JCAPS) Advisory Board   The purpose of the Journal of Campus Activities Practice and Scholarship (JCAPS) is to provide a forum for current discourse on issues pertinent to campus activities. JCAPS fills a void found in existing peer-reviewed outlet by providing space for current empirical research, along with other forms of scholarship, related to campus activities. The primary focus of JCAPS is on practice in campus activities, and to that end, each submission will be scrutinized for authors clearly addressing implications for practice, along with directions for further research.   As a national peer-reviewed journal, JCAPS represents a space with an intent to not only advance scholarship in campus activities, but to develop scholars and scholar-practitioners in campus activities. Campus activities practice is specifically defined as work related to student organizations and the training, development and learning of the members and leaders, as well as student organization advising; programming (and issues related to programming such as risk, budgets, inclusion), programming boards, and the effects of programming on students and campuses; and issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice across student activities practice.   In order to advance scholarship along these themes of student activities practice, JCAPS would seek submissions of the following types: research articles, including examples of application of theory to practice; assessment projects rooted in practice; graduate student research/research in brief; research book reviews; and, reviews of different methodologies.   The Advisory Board will be comprised of five-seven professionals with the following experience:   ·         Individuals with prior experience as editors/associate editors/section editors of other peer reviewed journals, and who also have experience as published scholars. ·         Representatives from the Board, the National Office, and the Research & Scholarship Group, as well as a faculty member from a preparation program. ·         A Professional Intern. (This position is designed to give a campus activities professional without journal experience a chance to be exposed to scholarly activity)

In 2018-2019, we took some additional time to review the mission purpose of the event to ensure we were best celebrating our student’s success. We found ways to fold in additional features, recruit a more diverse nomination pool, and publicly celebrate all nominees. Join us to learn more about how we Leveled Up our student impact awards and hopefully brainstorm new ideas for your campus.

A recent LinkedIn study (https://tinyurl.com/yygnnem2) of two million members’ profiles determined which soft skills are most in demand. They found that the top skills employers look for from ideal candidates include communication, organization, team work, social skills, adaptability, and creativity. Luckily, these skills are among the many strengths professionals bring to the campus activities field each year. This webinar will highlight several approaches to helping your students translate their campus activities duties into a positive job search experience.
