Webinar - “Just the Way It Is”: Examining Manifestations of Whiteness in Campus Activities
    Category: Webinars

  • Members: Schools
    Regions: All
Target Audience: Faculty, Graduate Student, Professional Staff
In her seminal book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?, Beverly Tatum (1997) states that whiteness, or the assumed superiority of White people, is reaffirmed through cultural images and messages and is like smog in the air. Whiteness shapes actions, social practices and dispositions, and thus constitutes a part of the “know how” or practical knowledge that “competent” student affairs educators possess. Guided by Critical Whiteness Studies, this webinar seeks to illuminate the “common sense” white norms that permeate the field of campus activities. We will examine how whiteness is unintentionally embedded in our practice and discuss ways to infuse DEI efforts into all aspects of our work, including programming, policy development, advising, and supervision. This session will particularly benefit White folx – faculty, staff, graduate students – who make decisions about the institution’s future including curriculum, finances, human resources, facilities, and co-curricular activities. Through guided reflective exercises and discussions, this webinar will offer insight into the development of anti-racist practices and will provide tools for participants to begin thinking about their work differently in relation to individual and structural whiteness. This webinar offers 1 credit of continuing education for Certified Student Affairs Educators (1 Core SJI or 1 Campus Activities credit).NACA has been approved by the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification to provide CE credit for Certified Student Affairs Educators (CSAEd). Programs that qualify for CE credit in this program are clearly identified. NACA is solely responsible for all aspects of this program. 1:00 PM ET, June 28, 2023
