Advance Information on MSL 2009 - a fee reduction for your campus!

John P. Dugan and Susan R. Komives, MSL Co-Principal Investigators

During the 2007 NACA National Convention, NACA members were among the first to hear about the national results from the 2006 administration of the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership. We are writing today to give you advance notice of the plans to repeat the MSL in the 2008-2009 academic year. We would also like to share information with you regarding a price reduction for NACA member institutions.

This version of MSL will be managed for us by the Center for Student Studies, a division of the Survey Sciences Group, LLC in Ann Arbor, MI. We worked with them in the last version and are contracting with them for more of their services for MSL 2009.This will allow us to expand the scope as well as the quality of services offered to schools. The fee for participation will be $2,750 per campus, which reflects costs associated with data collection, analysis, and the preparation of a final report for your school. The fee is on par with or substantially lower than fees associated with most national studies.

Space to participate in MSL will again be limited. However, as an NACA member, we would like to offer your institution a guaranteed spot as well as a price reduction. For campuses that register and pay by April 15, 2008 we will apply a $250 institutional fee reduction bringing the total cost to $2,500. Please note that only one fee reduction will be allowed per institution.

As you may recall, MSL is a study of the influence of higher education on college student leadership development. The study measures leadership outcomes consistent with the Social Change Model of Leadership Development as well as leadership-related outcomes such as appreciation of diversity and cognitive complexity. The use of an adapted form of Astin's College Impact Model (IEO) provides measures of pre-college attitudes and experiences, extensive measures for campus involvement and college experiences, and outcomes measures such as leadership efficacy. A number of research design elements (e.g., custom questions, comparative samples) allow institutions to tailor participation to their unique institutional interests. Final reports will allow you to compare your data to institutions of a similar type. Much more information regarding the study, its design, and benefits of participation are available at www.leadershipstudy.net.

We hope you will consider participating in the next iteration of MSL. Feel free to contact us should you have any questions. For more information, or if you wish to register for the study visit www.leadershipstudy.net. We were at NASPA and CSS will have a booth in exhibits at ACPA and available to answer questions.
