Topic: The Roads Merge – Multicultural Programs and Student Activities
When: Feb. 15 from 8:50am – 9:50am

Last year, the Division of Student Affairs at Clemson University faced a $3M reduction in its state allocation – almost 1/3 of the budget.  This called for making sweeping changes which we all know happens slowly on a college campus.  When the economic crisis hit, someone said, “Never squander a crisis”!  This was an opportunity to rethink how we did business and create a campus environment that could better meet the needs of our students - with fewer resources.  Using our vision and goals, a set of guiding principles and keeping students at the core, we undertook a major reorganization which included the merging of the Gantt Intercultural Center and the Center for Student Involvement.  In this session, we will explore the strategies that were used to successfully create a new Gantt Center for Student Life.

Topic: How to Talk About Hot Topics on Campus: From Polarization to Moral Conversation
When: Feb. 15 from 1:15pm – 3:45pm

On today’s college campus, whether in the classroom or the meeting room, hot topics are discussed daily. But how can we talk about these hot topics without getting burned?  Moral Conversation, a conversational tool created by Dr. Robert J. Nash, has been used as a vehicle to begin and sustain conversations around difficult subject matters. This workshop will introduce Moral Conversation, its theoretical and practical background, as well as provide participants with an opportunity to begin practicing moral conversation.

Topic: What Are You Doing? How Do You Know You’re Doing It? And Are You Doing It Well? Assessing Student Organization Effectiveness
When: Feb. 15 from 2:20pm – 3:20pm

Most student organizations have a statement of purpose or mission that articulates what they do and for whom. In addition, organizations map out annual plans that focus on recruitment, membership development, programs, services, and community involvement. But how do student leaders know that they are achieving their organization mission or that plans are effective? This session will review an assessment program that allows students to answer these critical questions. The Assessment and Improving Student Organizations program provides a structure for analyzing the workings of student organizations, with the goal of generating insights that will be helpful for determining how effectively the organization is functioning, and for identifying strengths and areas of improvement and identifying priorities and plans for future improvement. Student leaders and organization advisors are encouraged to attend this session!

Topic:   Financing Student Activities
When: Feb. 16 from 9:55am – 10:55am

Budget cuts, staff furloughs, personnel reductions, hiring freezes, shrinking endowments, eliminating classes, and cost containment are topics dominating current campus discussions.  The funding of student activity programs in this period of financial uncertainty has become difficult.  This program will discuss the preliminary findings of an ongoing national research project investigating the current status of the student activity fee. A review of state law, state agency or board of control regulations or polices will be examined.  In addition, the collection, control, and use of student activity fees on college and university campuses will be presented. The program will provide the latest and most current data about the financing of student activity programs in these trying economic times.
